What a way to end the year! The last round of league games were spread over five days, culminating in the latest “clásico” between Real Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday! Ronaldo and Messi came in to that game tied on 53 goals for the calendar year, but Messi came away with the spoils after converting a penalty in a 0-3 victory, Luis Suárez and Aleix Vidal the other scorers (for the record, Tottenham’s Harry Kane passed both Messi and Ronaldo in the end, ending the year with 57). Barça go in to the short Christmas break a massive 14 points above their arch-rivals, and their gap over Atlético Madrid and Valencia also widened after both lost by a single goal, the former at Espanyol, and the latter at home to Villarreal, Bacca the scorer for the visitors there. Fifth placed Sevilla were also beaten 3-1 at Real Sociedad, a result which cost the job of coach Eduardo Berizzo. Ben Yedder got the goal for the visitors, but it was to no avail, Carlos Vela coming on to score for the Basque team with his last touch before moving on to Los Angeles and the MLS. Elsewhere Raúl García converted a penalty as Athletic Bilbao won 0-2 at Betis, and Iago Aspas helped himself to a brace as Celta beat local rivals Deportivo 1-3. (27.12.17)
