What a rotten week it was for Spanish sides in Europe! On Tuesday Barcelona unexpectedly crashed out on the away goal rule after losing 3-0 to Roma, and on Wednesday Sevilla followed them despite a plucky 0-0 draw at Bayern Munich. And Real Madrid were in serious trouble as well when Juventus cancelled out their 0-3 first leg lead, only a controversial Ronaldo penalty with the game already in injury time taking them through 4-3 on aggregate. That meant of course that Ronaldo has now scored in all ten games he has participated in this year (14 goals in all), which is yet another record for the Portuguese striker. That was though the only goal scored by the La Liga teams this week, Atlético Madrid going down 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon in Thursday’s Europa League game, albeit that they qualified for the semi-finals thanks to the 2-0 result from a week ago.

Barcelona came back at the weekend though to beat third placed Valencia 2-1on Saturday, and they stay eleven points clear of Atlético, who won 3-0 against Levante the following day. Griezmann was amongst the scorers, as was Fernando Torres just a few days after announcing he will be leaving in the summer (and on the day of “El Niño”!), his 100 th league goal for the club. He will be sorely missed! Real Madrid meanwhile closed in on their Champions League spot for next season with a 1-2 win at bottom club Málaga, and honours were shared between Sevilla and Villarreal in their battle for one of the Europa League places, Bacca getting his name on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw. A fairly low scoring weekend however, Raúl García the only other of our current Pichichis to add to a tally, despite Athletic’s 2-3 defeat against struggling Deportivo. (16.04.18)
