The fate of all four Spanish clubs competing in the Champions League was decided this week with one match still to go. Real Madrid and Barcelona ensured top spot in their groups, the former beating Roma 0-2 with goals by Bale and Lucas Vázquez, and the latter winning 1-2 at PSV Eindhoven, Messi and Piqué the scorers there. Atlético have also qualified for the knock-out stage after beating Monaco 2-0 thanks to early goals from Koke and Griezmann, but Valencia will have to settle for third spot in their group and a place in the Europa League after they lost 1-0 at Juventus. Betis are the only other La Liga side to tie up their place in the next round of the Europa League though after a strike by Canales gave them a 1-0 victory over Olympiacos. Sevilla and Villarreal will have to wait until the last group game however, the former beaten 1-0 by Standard Liège, and the latter drawing 0-0 at Glasgow Rangers.

Barcelona are back at the top of the first division after a 2-0 victory over Villarreal, with Sevilla dropping to second after a 1-1 draw at fourth placed Alavés. Ben Yedder saved a point for the Andalusians there, and Atlético could only draw 1-1 at Girona as well, Stuani’s penalty giving the locals the lead before the visitors equalized with an own goal. Levante are up to sixth after a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao (which cost the job of coach Berizzo), Roger amongst the scorers for the Valencia based side, and elsewhere there were braces for Carrillo (Leganés) and Aspas (Celta), and another goal by Mata (Getafe).
