No Spanish teams in the European finals this year after Barcelona and Valencia were both knocked out at the semi-final stage. Barça won the first leg of their Champions League tie 3-0 against Liverpool, with one from Luis Suárez and two from Messi, the second, a sublime free kick, taking him to 600 goals for his club just 3 days after Cristiano Ronaldo also reached the 600 mark in club football. However Liverpool surprised the Catalans with a 4-0 victory in Anfield to set up an all English final with Tottenham. Meanwhile Valencia also lost to Premier League opposition in the Europa League, Arsenal beating them 3-1 in the first leg (Diakhaby the scorer there) and 2-4 in the return (with two from Gameiro) and, with Chelsea also making it through, all four European finalists are English.

Week 36: Barça put out a side packed with reserves in between their European games, and were beaten 2-0 by Celta, with a strike by Maxi Gómez and a Iago Aspas penalty. Aspas is vying for the “Zarra” award as the top Spanish goalscorer together with the likes of Espanyol’s Borja Iglesias, who scored twice against Atlético to keep his team in the running for the European spots. Valencia though were at full strength as they are still hoping to make it to the fourth Champions League spot, and they beat Huesca 2-6, with two each from Rodrigo and Santi Mina. Getafe holds on to fourth place however after beating Girona 2-0 with goals from Jorge Molina and Angel.

Week 37: Messi is vying for the European Golden Shoe again this season, but he was honest enough to admit that Barcelona’s second against Getafe was an own goal, and not his. That result allowed Valencia to overtake Getafe for fourth place after the Ches beat Alavés 3-1, Santi Mina amongst the scorers there. With several issues still at stake, all matches kicked off at the same time, Girona now favourites to go down with Huesca and Rayo after they lost 1-2 to Levante, Stuani’s opener being overturned by strikes from Morales and Bardhi later on. A 3-1 victory against Celta, with two from Raúl García and one from Williams, and an Aspas penalty in reply, allowed Athletic Bilbao the chance to catch Sevilla for sixth place (they play each other on the last day), the Andalusians drawing 1-1 at Atlético with another goal from Sarabia. However the Basque side themselves could be pipped for the third and last Europa League spot if they lose and either Espanyol or Real Sociedad (who also meet each other next Saturday) win. Both won this weekend, the former 0-2 at Leganés (with two more from Borja Iglesias), and the latter 3-1 against Real Madrid . (14.05.19)
