Only one red card in day
two, Betis and Spain winger Joaquín letting his nerves get the better of
him and picking up a second yellow card for protesting too strongly to the
referee about the free kick leading up to Espanyol's last gasp equaliser. After
the match the player complained that Wome and company had been kicking him for
90 minutes, and why should he be the one to get sent off? That's life though,
and he will have to learn to control himself or else everyone will be out to
provoke him. Wome as it happened was one of the new bunch of villains who
picked up yellow cards in each of their first two league games. Habitual
readers of these pages will recognise a few old names amongst them as well, for
example Javi Navarro, who put in a good claim for the lead role in "The
Midnight Strangler" after his throat hold on Luis Enrique did the round of the
world's press. One who doesn't feature this week though is Valcarce, the
disciplinary committee deciding to cancel his second yellow and consequently
the red from last week on appeal. (08.09.03) |
