Villains

Cameroon's international left back Wome moved ahead of the pack this weekend after picking up his sixth yellow card in as many matches. The two he received on Sunday against Real Madrid, the second after a macho head-banging session with Michel Salgado, also earned him a red card, one of three in the latest round of games. Bizzarri also got his marching orders after giving away a penalty against Racing Santander, and poor old Javi Moreno only lasted twenty minutes after coming on as substitute before he was booked for a second time for handling the ball and had to leave the field of play.

The real villains this weekend though were the two groups of idiots who caused the third division match between Langreo and twice relegated Real Oviedo to be abandoned. Television pictures captured scenes of one hooligan brandishing a knife as the two groups fought with bottles and sticks, and frightened fans took refuge on the pitch to get away from the danger. A sad comedown for a club that only three or four seasons ago were in the first division, and hopefully the authorities will clamp down hard on the offenders. (07.10.03)
