Villains

A surprisingly quiet last weekend of the season, with only one red card when Espanyol's Jarque picked up a second bookable offence in the second half of the match against Athletic Bilbao. That contrasts favourably with the last two or three years, where the prizes (and punishments) at stake often caused nerves to run high.

Only three players reached the five yellow card threshold as well, Jarque's team mate Alex Fernández being one of them and Mallorca's Arango and Luis García the other two. All will miss the first match of next season, pending appeals.

However with only the cup final to go, Osasuna's Pablo García can only increase his lead at the top of the table. The Uruguayan hard man is still in demand though, and he may be tempted to leave Pamplona this summer if the price is right.

Elsewhere the disciplinary committee handed out a €12,000 fine to Samuel Eto'o for his provocative chants against Real Madrid at Barcelona's victory celebrations. The ex Madrid striker apologised to his old club afterwards, but it was too late to stop the penalty being imposed. (31.05.05)

PS No question of who the top villain was this season, Pablo García already way out in front in our chart before his late red card in the cup final for a vicious tackle on Joaquín set a new record of 32 points for this section. (11.06.06)
