OK, let's see if we can sort
this lot out. Of the eleven red cards shown last weekend, three were cancelled.
There was one new one though, Osasuna's Corrales getting a one match ban for
insulting the officials in the players' tunnel after the game finished. The red
cards shown to Juande Ramos and Kapo were downgraded to yellows (it seems that
saying "what?" to the referee is only a yellow card offence (for bad
education?)), and one of Felipe Luis's yellow cards was ruled out.
The disciplinary committee
also cancelled Gerardo's yellow card for handling in the area when it was
clearly shown that Ramírez Domínguez was mistaken and the player
had headed the ball clear. Not a lot of compensation for Real Sociedad or their
coach José Marí Bakero though, and the defeat against Zaragoza
still stands.
So on to this week's games,
and things were back to normal, with only four red cards. The aforementioned
Gerardo was in the referee's bad books again, but this time it is unlikely he
will be pardoned after an over the top tackle on Mallorca's Basinas. Edu may
have better luck though as he was sent off after catching Zaragoza's Juanfran
with what looked like an unintentional flying elbow, and Racing's Pinillos was
also shown a straight red card for bringing Espanyol's Tamudo down in the
penalty area in the last minute of their match.
Valencia substitute Jorge
López was also sent for a (slightly) early bath for a second bookable
offence, and Sevilla's Daniel Alves became the first player to reach the five
yellow card threshold, meaning he too will sit out a one match ban. For the
record, suspensions for the straight red cards will be served out in the next
match (i.e. the midweek cup ties), whereas those for accumulation of yellow
cards (either two in a match or five in all) will be applied to the next game
in the same competition (in this case the weekend league fixtures). (24.10.06)
