...seconds away, last round,
ding ding! And it's an uppercut from..er..Diogo, and a swinging left
from..um..Luis Fabiano... Hang on, this is football, not boxing! But there they
were, handbags at ten paces at the end of the match between Zaragoza and
Sevilla, knocking seven shades of something out of each other! Saturday night's
live match produced some unexpected entertainment at the end, but at the time
of writing it has cost both of them a five match ban pending the inevitable
appeals.
The rest is all a bit tame,
but there were five more red cards this weekend, including the unfortunate
Osasuna manager Cuco Ziganda, who stopped a ball which was going out of play
just inside the pitch and was sent off for his troubles. Levante's assistant
coach Sánchez Maqueda was also shown a red for insulting the officials,
and an old favourite Pablo García got his marching orders on his return
to the Celta side after picking up a second caution in a match in which referee
Pérez Lima produced no less than fourteen yellow cards. García
could be on for a bigger ban though after calling the referee, not just a "hijo
de p***", but a "hijo de la gran p***"!
There were red cards for
second bookable offences as well for Atlético's Gabi and Getafe's
Alexis, both late on in their respective matches. And another seven players
reached the five yellow card mark, provoking an automatic one match suspension,
including Real Madrid's Michel Salgado and Sergio Ramos, as well as
Pernía (Atlético), Angel (Celta), Zabaleta (Espanyol), Kapo
(Levante) and Arruabarrena (Villarreal). (09.01.07)
PS. As expected, Pablo
García was given a two match ban for his outpourings. Appeals by
Zaragoza and Sevilla for the five match bans to Diogo and Luis Fabiano have so
far been turned down. |
