Only two players sent off in
the nail-biting last round of games, and one of those was in the only match of
the day with nothing at stake! Deportivo's Andrade got his marching orders with
less than a quarter of an hour on the clock for calling the referee "tonto"
(stupid) after being booked, thereby demonstrating that the one who was really
"tonto" was the player himself! Elsewhere Zaragoza's Piqué was sent off
for a foul on an opponent on the hour mark of their match at Recreativo, a fact
which didn't prevent his side from equalising an saving a point which took them
in to the UEFA cup.
Nine other players completed
the five yellow card cycle and have been given a one match ban, including
Iraola (Athletic), Maxi López and Víctor (Mallorca), Roberto
Carlos (Real Madrid), Poulsen (Sevilla), Guille Franco (Villarreal) and
Herrero, Gabi Milito and D'Alessandro (all Zaragoza). All will be suspended for
the opening match of next season, although as readers probably know, several of
them (for example Piqué, Roberto Carlos, Gabi Milito) may well be plying
their trade outside of Spain next season. It remains to be seen whether the
bans will be carried across to the new location .
In any case it's
congratulations to Diogo, who takes this year's "Villains" award by a mile. His
bun fight with Sevilla's Luis Fabiano on day 17 and subsequent five match ban
helped of course, but even without that he would have taken our prize. Let's
hope he stays in Spain to keep us entertained for another year! (19.06.07)
A bit of a sting in the tail
of a bad tempered cup final between Sevilla and Getafe, with goalscorer
Kanouté sent off for retaliating late on, and Contra (not as was
originally thought Celestini) shown a red card at the end of the match for
arguiing with the referee. (23.06.07) |
