No less than nine red cards
this weekend, the second highest tally of the season. Three of them though were
for coaching staff, Mallorca's Servera and León, and Murcia's Morga, all
of whom were sent to their respective changing rooms for protesting. Mallorca's
Ballesteros was also sent off for insulting the referee at the same time, his
third straight red card of the season, and as he also picked up his fifth
booking earlier on in the game he will have to sit out the next two matches.
Some fun and games as well
in the clash between Getafe and Racing Santander, a curtain raiser for next
Wednesday's cup semi-final second leg between the two sides. Pablo Alvarez was
shown a red card while still on the bench for comments to a linesman (later
rescinded by the disciplinary committee), and Racing keeper Toño was
sent off after kicking at Gavilán and then throwing a punch at Braulio
as players wrestled for the ball after Getafe's second goal. Braulio was shown
a second yellow card in the incident and had to go as well, but the biggest
loss was to Racing, Toño being given a three match ban which, being for
a straight red card, means he will miss the cup tie as well as two league
games.
There were red cards as well
for Barcelona's Gaby Milito and Murcia's César Arzo, both for second
bookable offences in their respective matches. They will be joined on the
sidelines next weekend by another ten players who picked up their fifth yellow
cards of the season, including Iniesta (Barcelona), De Guzman (Deportivo), Lola
(Espanyol), Celestini (Getafe), Basinas and Ibagaza (Mallorca), De Coz and
Pablo García (Murcia), Sergio Sánchez (Racing) and Camuñas
(Recreativo). (18.03.08)
PS The appeals committee
cancelled Iniesta's fifth yellow card and reduced Toño's ban from three
games to two. (20.03.08) |
