Villains

First division clubs entered the cup for the first time this week, and there were red cards for Racing keeper Coltorti and Villarreal striker Nilmar. Coltorti was sent off for giving away a late penalty against Salamanca, and with all three changes made right back Pinillos tried in vain to save the spot kick which put the second division side ahead in the tie. Nilmar got his marching orders for elbowing a Puertollano player late on, and he was given a two match ban by the disciplinary committee as a result.

Only one red card at the weekend, and even that was a bit harsh. The offending player was Real Madrid's Raúl Albiol, who pulled down Getafe's Soldado just outside of the area. The referee ruled that it was a goal-scoring occasion, although with his back to goal it was not very likely that Soldado could have done much, even if he had won the ball. Madrid are expected to appeal, but if he does have to miss the next round of games he will be joined on the sidelines by Paulo Assunçao (Atlético), Barral (Sporting) and Bruno (Valencia), all of whom picked up their fifth bookings of the season.
