Villains

No question about who the main villain is this week, Cristiano Ronaldo's red card for fending off Málaga's Mtiglia with his elbow filling acres and acres of newspaper space. Madrid and Barcelona based sports papers produced wildly varying results in their internet questionnaires about how big the ban should be (no surprise there!), but with the full back likely to be out for a month with a broken nose, nobody can deny that there was real contact. Only two other red cards at the weekend, both for second bookable offences, Atlético's Paulo Assunçao picking up his second red in ten days at Getafe, and Racing's Oriol getting his marching orders right at the end of the game at Sporting. All will be joined by nine players who were given their fifth bookings this weekend, including Acasiete (Almería), San José and Javi Martínez (Athletic Bilbao), Keita (Barcelona), Moisés (Espanyol), Borja Valero and Mario Suárez (Mallorca), Dragutinovic (Sevilla) and Borja (Valladolid). (26.01.10)

PS The disciplinary committee handed out a two match ban to Cristiano Ronaldo in the end, although Madrid will be appealing to try and get this reduced.
