Eight red cards on an
exciting Saturday night, with all ten games kicking off at the same time just
one week away from the end of the season. Athletic Bilbao's Amorebieta was
unlucky to get his marching orders after a shot from Real Madrid's
Higuaín hit him on the arm inside the penalty area early on in the their
match, Athletic's team delegate Iñaki Morán also sent to the
stands for his protests in the incident (although his red card was downgraded
to a yellow by the disciplinary committee. Madrid's big rivals Barcelona were
also favoured by a red card, Sevilla's Konko getting himself sent off for a
second bookable offence after the break. Sevilla played better after that
though and almost came back to draw.
Villarreal beat local rivals
Valencia 2-0 to close in on the Europa League spots, although they made things
more difficult for themselves after having Llorente and Capdevila both sent off
for double yellow cards with a quarter of an hour to go. Capdevila's bookings
were to say the least strange, The Spanish international full back asked
referee Clos Gómez if Llorente's second yellow card was for Busquets,
and after getting booked himself for the comment repeated the question about
his own yellow card! It appears he was making an ironic reference to the
booking which Barcelona's Busquets didn't get in their meeting a few days
ago!
Two red cards as well in the
relegation struggle between Valladolid and Racing Santander, Racing's
Moratón the first to go for a second caution and Valladolid's Borja
following him down the tunnel a few minutes later for the same reason. And
Zaragoza defender Contini was also given his second red card in three games
after he too picked up two yellow cards at Xerez. All will miss the last
weekend together with seven other players who completed the five yellow card
cycle, including Ponzio (Zaragoza), the first player to reach the total of 15
bookings, Arbeloa (Real Madrid) and Toribio (Málaga), who both picked up
their tenth, and Xavi And Maxwell (Barcelona) and Marc Bertrán and Ayoze
(Tenerife), who picked up their fifth. (12.05.10)
PS The disciplinary
committee decided that Capdevila's comments only merited one booking, so his
red card was cancelled. |
