We got away without any red
cards in the midweek cup quarter finals, although there were four in the league
at the weekend, all with straight red cards. Levante coach Luis García
was one of those, in his case for protesting, although he did have a point
after the referee disallowed a quickly taken free kick (see "White Stick"
section for more). Racing's Munitis was sent off for lashing out with his elbow
in retaliation at Athletic's Javi Martínez late in their game, the
club's appeal for clemency due to provocation falling on deaf ears. And there
were two red cards in the Monday night game, Atlético's Antonio
López taking the long walk after giving away a penalty on Nsue (which De
Gea actually saved), and Mallorca's De Guzmán following him down the
tunnel later on for a tackle from behind on Juanfran. García was given a
two match ban, and Munitis will also miss the next two matches as he also
picked up his fifth yellow card of the season before being sent off. Also
suspended next weekend for accumulation of bookings will be Mbami
(Almería), Cendrós (Mallorca), Zurutuza (Real Sociedad) and
Alexis (Sevilla). (19.01.11) |
