All eight midweek cup ties passed by without a single red card, but there again (with the exception of Athletic v Eibar) these were only first leg matches. The fun and games usually start at the sharp end of the second leg! There were four red cards at the weekend though, starting with Osasuna's Armenteros, who got his marching orders for a rash tackle on Getafe's Valera in the second half of the opening match on Saturday. He was followed down the tunnel later on by assistant coach Alfredo Sánchez, who was shown a red card for his protests about the late penalty - see "White Stick" section for more. Later in the evening Sevilla's Fazio was sent off for the second time this season after giving away a penalty on Málaga's Joaquín, and the following day Levante's Lell was given a head's start in the race for the clean end of the team bath after picking up a second booking in injury time of the game at Zaragoza. All can start their Christmas break a week early, as can five other players who completed the five yellow card cycle, Susaeta (Athletic), Lafita (Getafe), Weligton (Málaga), Geromel (Mallorca) and Oier (Osasuna). That is of course subject to appeal, and Oier in particular should be let off after that penalty incident referred to earlier! (18.12.12)
