Two red cards in the first legs of the cup quarter-finals, with Málaga's Monreal getting his marching orders for bringing down Barcelona's Pedro with a quarter of an hour of the match to go, and Valencia coach Ernesto Valverde being sent to the stands for protesting some questionable refereeing decisions in the tie against Real Madrid. Valverde got a two match suspension, Monreal one, and there were one (cup) match bans as well for Alvaro (Zaragoza) and Paulao (Betis) after both picked up their third bookings of the competition.

Another three reds at the weekend, including one for Espanyol's physical trainer for kicking the ball away. The other two were both for second bookable offences, Mallorca's new signing Luna picking up his second booking late on in the game at Espanyol, and Barcelona's Piqué getting a second yellow card early in the second half at Real Sociedad. The young lad can be forgiven for being a bit nervous as his mega-star girlfriend Shakira is about to give birth to their first child, but he can't protest about the first booking for having the ball kicked at his legs whilst standing up to a free kick, as his team-mate Messi did exactly that to Seba Fernández in the midweek cup tie against Málaga! Whether or not it affected things though, Barça went on to lose their first match of the season.

Luna and Piqué will be joined on the sidelines next weekend by six other players who reached the five yellow card threshold, Osasuna's Damià, who picked up his tenth caution, and Gabi (Atlético), Rubén Pérez (Betis), Verdú (Espanyol), Michel (Levante) and Apoño (Zaragoza), all of whom were given their fifth.
