The two matches from week 36 involving cup finalists Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid were brought forward to this Wednesday, the former beating Málaga 6-2, and the latter winning 1-3 against Celta. There were two red cards for Málaga players in their defeat, Sergio Sánchez for giving away a first half penalty on Ronaldo (which was saved by Willy), and Demichelis for a second bookable offence later on. One of Demichelis's bookings was cancelled on appeal, but the other one was his tenth of the season so he still had to sit out the weekend game, as did Celta's Alex López after he picked up his fifth.

Gil Manzano was the referee who sent off the two Málaga players, and he made it four red cards in three days after he also despatched Levante's Diop and Pedro López to the dressing rooms in the Friday night game against Zaragoza, the former with a straight red for a hard tackle on Víctor Rodríguez at the start of the second half, and the latter for a second bookable offence near the end.

The following day Hernández Hernández went one better though (at least on average) when he showed three red cards to Mallorca personnel in their tie at Athletic Bilbao, Fontàs for a second booking after giving away a penalty for hands midway through the first half (curiously saved as well by Aouate), Ximo Navarro, also for a second yellow card near the end, and the physical trainer Servera for protesting about all of that. Later in the evening Espanyol's Víctor Sánchez also got his marching orders in the last minute in their match against Real Madrid, the red (and blue striped?) mist descending on the ex Barça midfielder as he launched in to a two-footed tackle on Higuaín.

He and all the rest will miss the next round of games, as will nine other players who completed the five yellow card cycle, Espanyol's Forlín, who joins the select group who have picked up 15 bookings this season, Real Sociedad's Mikel González, who got his tenth, and Capdevila (also Espanyol), Puñal (Osasuna), Rukavina (Valladolid), Loovens (Zaragoza), and Jonathan Vila and Jonny Castro (both Celta), who were all shown their fifth. Vila and Castro will of course serve out their ban in week 37 as their week 36 match was brought forward, and Rukavina will miss his first minutes of the league, the only outfield player who has played in every minute of every game this season to date.
