Three red cards on the penultimate weekend of the season, including one for Athletic's Muniain for a retaliatory foul on Levante's Héctor Rodas, and one for Espanyol's Wakaso, who was shown two yellow cards in succession for protesting near the end of the local derby against Barcelona. Wakaso was given an extra two game ban for continuing to complain after the red card was shown, although he may have got off lightly as Fernández Borbolán chose not to report that the Ghanaian midfielder pushed him as players surrounded the referee when he awarded a questionable free kick to Barça on the edge of the area.

The third red card of the day was for Osasuna coach Mendilibar, who felt himself unlucky to be singled out by referee Muñiz Fernández after an "unidentified person" lobbed an extra ball on to the pitch from the dugout to waste time near the end of the game against Sevilla. In true Monty Python style (aka Life of Brian!), Muñiz asked "who threw that?", and when nobody owned up he pointed at the coach as the man in charge and sent him up to the stands!

All three will miss the last game of the season, as will ten other players who reached the five yellow card threshold, Osasuna's Damià (15 bookings) and Arribas (10), Atlético's Godín and Gabi (both 10), Valladolid's Sastre and Zaragoza's José Marí (both 10), Getafe's Fede Fernández and Lafita (both 5), and Betis's Adrián and Real Madrid's Khedira (both 5).
