It was not only a record weekend for goals, but also for red cards, with no less than eight shown over the four days. On Saturday Iturra (Granada), Fontàs (Celta) and Valera (Getafe) all got their marching orders in their respective games for second bookable offences, and in the first two matches on Sunday keepers Rubén (Rayo) and Navas (Levante) were both shown straight red cards for giving away first half penalties. Later in the evening Betis defender Paulao was sent to run an early bath after picking up a second yellow card shortly before half time in the city derby at Sevilla, his coach Roberto Ríos following him down the tunnel a minute or two later for excessive protests, and on Monday Málaga's Portillo was also sent off for a second caution late on in the game against Athletic. Ríos has been given a two match ban, and the others one, together with Matilla and Xavi Torres (both Betis), Arbilla (Rayo), Arbeloa (Real Madrid) and Ebert (Valladolid), all of whom picked up their fifth bookings of the season.
