You all saw the television pictures we suppose, a big fat man threatening referee Delgado Ferreiro and one of his officials in this weekend’s table-topping star game between city rivals Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid. That was of course none other than Argentina’s Germán “Mono” Burgos, former Mallorca and Atlético keeper and aspiring rock superstar, and now assistant to Diego Simeone at the Calderón stadium! Burgos was actually trying to calm things down at first, but he got a little bit carried away and ended up getting himself sent off, the disciplinary committee handing him a three match ban as a result. Simeone himself picked up his fifth booking of the season and he too will have to serve out a one match suspension, leaving Atlético without a coach next weekend. It gets worse though, as Delgado also booked Godín, Arda Turan and Diego Costa, all of whom were already on four yellow cards and therefore will also miss out on Saturday’s game at Celta.

Elsewhere there were five more red cards this weekend, Granada’s Mainz the first to go after giving away a penalty on Athletic Bilbao’s Aduríz in the Friday night game. Levante’s new signing Víctor Casadesús was given his marching orders the next day for a hard tackle on Osasuna’s Cejudo with an hour gone in their match, and one of Elche’s technical staff was sent to the stands for protesting later in the evening. And on Sunday Villarreal’s Uche and Valencia’s Barragán were both sent off for second bookable offences late on in their respective matches. All will be joined on the sidelines next weekend by another eight payers (other than the four from Atlético mentioned above) who completed the five yellow card cycle, Alexis (Getafe) who picked up his tenth booking of the season, and Chica (Betis), Córdoba (Espanyol), Diop and Simao (Levante), Trashorras (Rayo), and Alberto Moreno and Fazio (Sevilla), all of whom were shown their fifth. PS Uche was let off one of his yellow cards on appeal, and his one match ban is therefore cancelled.
