Víctor Sánchez is the clear winner of this season’s “Villains” award, the Espanyol midfielder picking up 20 yellow cards, three reds and five days’ suspensions in all domestic club competitions, well ahead of second placed Gálvez. It was a surprisingly quiet last weekend to the season though, the only red cards coming in the Friday match between Málaga and Levante, with nothing at stake whatsoever! Levante’s Diop was in fact the only player to be sent off after picking up two bookings, and outgoing Málaga coach Bernd Schuster said goodbye as only he could, getting himself red-carded for protesting, then pushing the fourth official and finally ignoring the referee’s instructions for him to move away from the entrance to the players’ tunnel. All of that earned him a three match ban, if and when he ever returns to Spain. Aufwiederzehen, Bernd, we will miss you!

It was not just red cards though, the 46 yellow cards shown over the last weekend being the third lowest tally of the season. Only six players reached the five card threshold, Raúl García (Atlético), who picked up his tenth booking, and Azeez (Almería), Piqué (Barcelona), Lacen (Getafe), and Roberto and Piti (Granada), who were all given their fifth. All will miss the opening day of next season, as will Atlético coach Diego Simeone, who was also shown his fifth yellow card of the current campaign. (21.05.14)
