Only one red card this weekend, the unlikely recipient Real Madrid ball-player Isco for a second bookable offence late on in the game at Málaga. The club are expected to appeal the decision though, as at least one yellow card appeared to be a bit harsh. As it happened Málaga’s Samuel was able to play that match as one of his cautions from last weekend was overturned, so there is some precedent. If unsuccessful though Isco will be joined on the sidelines next weekend by six other players who completed the five yellow card cycle, Verza (Almería), Balenziaga (Athletic), Fede Cartabia (Córdoba), Rodrigues (Elche), Sarabia (Getafe) and Tito (Rayo).

The real villains however this weekend were the 200 or so radical idiots from Atlético and Deportivo (with a scattering from Rayo and Alcorcón) who battled it out on the banks of the Manzanares River in Madrid on Sunday morning, resulting in the violent death of one of the Depor “ultras”. Hopefully now the authorities will take firm action to stamp out these criminal gangs who are a blight on the game. (02.12.14)
