Two red cards on the opening weekend of the new year, Celta’s Planas the first to be sent off for a hard tackle on Sevilla’s Denis Suárez midway through the first half of Saturday’s match. Maybe a red was a bit harsh though, and it probably cost the Galicians the match despite a brave performance after that. Elsewhere Almería’s Michel Macedo got his marching orders for a second bookable offence near the end of the game at Málaga, although in his case it was so late on that it didn’t prevent his side from picking up a much needed win. Both will have to serve out a one match ban, as will ten other players who picked up their fifth bookings of the season, Ximo Navarro (Almería), Cabral (Celta), Diop (Levante), Insúa (Rayo), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Bergara and Granero (Real Sociedad), Krychowiak (Sevilla), Gayà (Valencia) and Jaume Costa (Villarreal).
