Just one red card in the midweek cup ties, and one more at the weekend in the league. Celta’s David Costas was the player to be sent off in the Copa del Rey, the young defender picking up two bookings late on in the game against Athletic Bilbao. And Real Madrid’s Coentrao saw red for a hard tackle on Espanyol’s Cañas at the beginning of the second half of the Saturday league game, although it didn’t really influence the result as Madrid went on to win 3-0.

Elche’s Damián Suárez is the first player to be suspended in the cup for accumulating three yellow cards, and he will have to sit out the return leg against Barcelona (a bit of a formality anyway after Barça’s 5-0 victory). In the weekend league games no less than eight players picked up their fifth cautions of the season, and they too will have to serve a one match suspension next weekend. That included Charles (Celta), Capa (Eibar), Lombán (Elche), Nikos and Barral (Levante), Nico Pareja (Sevilla, and Cheryshev and Trigueros (Villarreal). (14.01.15)

PS Cheryshev was let off his booking on appeal, so he will be available for Villarreal’s match against Athletic Bilbao. Athletic though will be missing Muniain after he was given a two match ban for insulting the referee at the end of Sunday’s defeat against Elche.
