Oh, oh, Ronaldo what have you done? The usually calm super-star lost it completely at Córdoba this weekend, getting away with a punch to the head of Crespo on the blind side of the referee, but then being sent off for slapping and kicking out at Edimar. He then further upset the local fans as well, stroking his “World Champions” badge as he walked off in what was seen as a gesture of arrogance. Some reports have put it down to stress caused by his recent break up with his long-time girlfriend, but whatever the case he could pick up a two or three match ban for the lapse of control (it helped though that he apologised later to the defender). Ronaldo’s attack probably sparked off a copy-cat offence though, Deportivo’s Fariña also seeing red for a retaliatory punch at Granada’s Fran Rico, who clearly exaggerated the incident.

Córdoba’s Fede Cartabia was also given his marching orders in the game against Madrid after picking up a second booking for giving away a late penalty, and Elche’s Fayçal Fajr had to take the long walk as well for a second yellow card a few minutes in to the second half of their game against Barcelona. Another six players will miss next weekend’s games after picking up their fifth cautions of the season, including Gabi (Atlético), Jonny Castro (Celta), Dani García (Eibar), Cisma and Jonathas (Elche) and Alexis (Getafe). And Atlético’s Godín will have to sit out Wednesday evening’s second leg cup tie against Barcelona after he picked up a third yellow card in the competition near the end of last week’s first leg in the Nou Camp.
