Villarreal’s Tomás Pina was lucky to be let off a booking at least when he took out Barcelona’s Busquets close to the break of their semi-final cup tie, although he got his come-uppance in the end, the ex Mallorca midfielder being shown a straight red card for a scything tackle on Neymar later on. He was given a two match ban which he will serve out in next season’s cup competition, and his team mate Cheryshev and Espanyol’s Arbilla will also miss the first of those ties after picking up their third yellow cards of the tournament. Barcelona’s Mascherano and Luis Suárez, who were on two bookings as well, came out of their tie unscathed, but Athletic’s De Marcos will miss the final after he did get a third caution in the match at the Power 8 stadium.

Four more red cards at the weekend, the first on Friday night for Eibar’s Dani García, who was given a second booking late on in the match at Levante. Two more came in the Sunday mid-day game, Rayo’s Tito picking up a second booking for bringing down Barcelona’s Luis Suárez in the penalty area early on in the second half, and Barça’s Dani Alves being shown a straight red for giving away a second penalty on Alberto Bueno with ten minutes to go. And later in the evening Valencia’s Javi Fuego was also given his marching orders for a second bookable offence near the end of the game against Atlético Madrid.

Atlético have the worst disciplinary record in the league though this season with no less than six players in our chart, including Mandzukic, who picked up his tenth booking in the league and his fourteenth in all domestic competitions in that match. The Serbian striker will miss next weekend’s fixtures, as will seven other players who completed the five yellow card cycle, Mandzukic’s team-mate Sigueira, plus Gurpegui (Athletic), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Iñigo López (Córdoba), Adrián González (Elche), Iborra (Sevilla) and Mustafi (Valencia). PS Iborra’s fifth yellow card was cancelled on appeal, and his one match ban has been revoked.
