The domestic season started with the Spanish Super Cup between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, and in the second leg in the Nou Camp we saw the first two red cards of the season, Piqué getting his marching orders for reportedly telling a linesman what he would like to do to his mother (?), and Kike Sola also seeing red late on for a hard tackle on Mascherano. Piqué denies making the remark (he already had a run in with referee Velasco Carballo a couple of years ago), but he was given a four match ban, which he must serve out in the league. Sola meanwhile got a one match suspension.

A lively start to the league as well, with six red cards in the ten games. Two new signings from the Premier League, Sevilla’s N’Zonzi, and Getafe’s Vergini, were the first to get a taste of Spanish referees when they both picked up double bookings in the opening two games of the season, and Levante’s Simao only lasted five minutes on Sunday before he was sent off for stepping on the leg of Celta’s Iago Aspas as he lay on the ground. Later in the evening Villarreal captain Bruno was red carded for kicking an opponent in an off the ball incident as tempers frayed near the end of the match at Betis, and his manager Marcelino was sent to the stands a few minutes earlier for protesting. And on Monday Granada’s new signing Salva Ruíz was also sent for an early bath for a high tackle on Eibar’s Dani García. All will miss next weekend’s fixtures at least. (26.08.15)

PS The disciplinary committee cracked down hard in their opening meeting of the season, Simao being given a four match ban, Bruno and Marcelino two, and all the others one.
