Maybe there was too much rum in the Christmas “turrones” or something, but three of the four red cards in the last round of games of the year were for coaching staff, Pepe Mel (Betis manager), Asier Santana (Real Sociedad utility man) and Ismael Martínez (Granada assistant) all picking up two match bans after being sent to the stands! All three came about though after referees awarded more than dubious penalties against their respective sides (see “White Stick” section for more), and Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay was so upset that he stormed into the referees’ changing room at half time and threatened to report the officials to the police! It remains to be seen what punishment he gets for his actions. The only player to be sent off however was Granada’s Biraghi, who picked up a second booking late on against Las Palmas, and he will miss the first match of the new year together with seven players who reached the five yellow card threshold, Deyverson, Simao and Pedro López (all Levante), Laporte and Beñat (Both Athletic), Lafita (Getafe) and Roque (Las Palmas).
