Not too many problems in the midweek quarter-final cup ties, everybody coming out unscathed on the disciplinary front to take their full contingents into next week’s second legs. Four red cards at the weekend though, Espanyol’s Gerard Moreno the first to go after picking up a second booking for protesting about the late equalizer scored by his old team, Villarreal. Sevilla’s Vitolo was also sent off for a second bookable offence at Atlético Madrid on Sunday, thereby provoking the ire of coach Unai Emery. Unfortunately the referee heard his comments, and he too was sent to the stands, earning himself the usual two match ban for such incidents. It wasn’t all bad news for Emery though, as his team held on to take a point from the Calderón stadium. Meanwhile Levante striker Deyverson got his second red card of the season on Monday night for two yellow cards, the first for diving in the area, and the second for standing too close to a free kick right at the end. You would have thought he had learned! All three outfield players will miss next weekend’s games together with four more “sinners” who reached the five yellow card threshold, Correa (Atlético), Vargas (Betis), Lux (Deportivo) and Víctor Alvarez (Espanyol).
