No less than seven red cards this weekend, including one each for Villarreal coach Fran Escribá and Málaga assistant Sergio Pellicer for protesting, both of whom will miss two matches. On Saturday Valencia’s Orellana and Málaga’s Rosales were both sent off for second bookable offences, and Deportivo’s Albentosa was given a straight red for catching Leganés striker Guerrero with a loose elbow. The following day Osasuna’s Oier got his marching orders early on after the referee ruled that he had been guilty of pulling down Espanyol’s Piatti in the area, and Sporting’s Jorge Meré was sent for an early bath for a foul on Celta’s Bongonda as he advanced on goal.

It was not just red cards that were in excess this weekend though, referees producing 65 bookings which took another thirteen players and a manager on to the five yellow card suspension threshold. Alavés were hardest hit, coach Pellegrino joing Laguardia, Manu García and Marcos Llorente on the sidelines for the midweek games. Sevilla will also lose three players though, Nico Pareja, N’Zonzi and Sarabia, and Villarreal two, Mario and Bruno. And elsewhere Saúl Ñíguez (Atlético), Piccini (Betis), Roncaglia (Celta), Capa (Eibar) and Samper (Granada) will have to serve out one match bans as well. Must have been something in the referees’ water bottles? (27.02.17)

PS The disciplinary committee let Oier off his red card after reviewing video evidence. That didn’t help the club much though as Espanyol scored from the resulting penalty, and Osasuna had to play the last seventy-five minutes with ten men, the defeat leaving them further adrift at the bottom of the table. Some days it’s better just to stay in bed…
