Gareth, boyo, what got in to you? The Real Madrid forward had a rush of blood at the start of the second half against Las Palmas after a clash with Jonathan Viera, and he got himself sent off for kicking his opponent and then pushing him over! Not like him at all! Bale was only one of ten players and staff to see red in the midweek games however, which must be something of a record. Eibar coach Medilibar and Osasuna and Celta assistants Sánchez Benito and Marcucci were also sent to the stands, and in the first game on Tuesday there were already two sendings off for second bookable offence, Eibar’s Lejeune and Real Sociedad’s Juanmi. The striker’s first yellow card though was for showing a T-shirt in memory of the recently deceased Pablo Raéz, a young, well-known cancer campaigner in Spain who died of Leukemia in Marbella a couple of days ago, but knowing that referees have instructions to punish that sort of display, he would have been better advised to do what others did this week, copy Raéz’s trademark by showing off his muscles! Still, it was a bit harsh of Undiano Mallenco to book him.

The red cards just kept on coming though, Alavés having Alexis and Katai both sent off in injury time at Granada, the first for a second caution (aggravated by him insulting the referee afterwards!) and the second for supposedly shrugging off an opponent with his elbow. And elsewhere Alberto Martín (Leganés) and Fontàs (Celta) both got their marching orders after picking up second bookings in their respective games against Valencia and Espanyol. All will miss next weekend’s fixtures together with six other players who completed the five yellow card cycle, Uche Agbo (Granada) who was shown his tenth yellow card of the season, and Dani Torres (Alavés), Godín (Atlético), Gastón Silva (Granada), Morata (Real Madrid) and Nasri (Sevilla), who all picked up their fifth. (03.03.17)

PS. Katai was let off his red card on appeal, but Alexis and Medilibar were given three match bans, and Bale and Sánchez Benito two.
