Eibar keeper Riesgo was given a run out by coach Mendilibar in the midweek round of games, but with less than half an hour gone he was sent off for the second time this season after handling the ball outside of the area. Although it was rash to come out of his area, he was probably a bit unfortunate to be shown a red card as he could do little about it as Lejeune headed the ball back in to his path. Elsewhere Celta’s Pablo Hernández got his marching orders for a second bookable offence early on in the second half of the game at Sevilla, and Las Palmas assistant coach Rafael Cristóbal was sent to the stands after he was shown two yellow cards for protesting at Leganés. All will miss the weekend round of games together with seven players who reached the five yellow card threshold, Godín (Atlético) and Jaume Costa (Villarreal), who were given their tenth bookings, and Cabral (Celta), Timor (Leganés), Cancelo and Zaza (both Valencia), and Musacchio (Villarreal), who were all shown their fifth. PS. Atlético coach Simeone was originally given a two match ban as well for putting his hands on the shoulders of the assistant referee at the end of the game against Villarreal to protest that the referee should have added on more injury time, but the appeals committee decided that the gesture was not aggressive, and downgraded it to a simple yellow card.
