A relatively low number of red and yellow cards this weekend, especially given that this was the last of the season, with only 37 yellow cards and two reds (against a season average of 54 and 3). The players sent off were Hernán (Las Palmas) and Capa (Eibar), both for second bookable offences in their matches at Deportivo and Barcelona. They will miss the first match of next season together with four players who reached the five yellow card threshold, including Escalante (Eibar), who picked up his tenth booking of the season, and Thomas (Atlético), Emre Çolak (Deportivo) and Bakambu (Villarreal), who were all given their fifth (as was Las Palmas assistant coach Eder Sarabia). As things stand, Granada’s Uche Agbo heads up our “Villains” chart, although Alavés full back Theo Hernández could still overtake him if he picks up a booking in next weekend’s cup final against Barcelona.

Before all that though there was a midweek game between Celta and Real Madrid which was rescheduled from earlier in the season. Celta’s Iago Aspas was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for what the referee considered to be a dive when he was tackled in the area by Sergio Ramos, and his team-mate Hugo Mallo also picked up his fifth booking of the season. Mallo was suspended at the weekend, but Aspas was let off the second caution by the disciplinary committee, and he played against Real Sociedad on Sunday. (23.05.17)

PS Capa’s second yellow card was also overturned on appeal, and so he will not be banned at the start of the new campaign.

PPS. Theo Hernández made it through the cup final without picking up a yellow card (scoring a cracker of a goal in to the bargain), and Nigeria’s Uche Agbo therefore takes this season’s “Villains” award.
