Some selective
sharp-shooting this week, as referees made their bookings count with seven reds
despite the low number of total cards. Megia Dávila and Pino Zamorano
produced a couple each, but the man who really made the headlines was
Rodríguez Santiago. He so upset Villarreal president Fernando Roig that
he left his seat and came on to the pitch to argue with the officials and
Celta's Jesuli, who he accused of feigning contact to get Berruet sent off in
the fiftieth minute. The referee had turned down two penalties for fouls either
side of half time by Sergio on Víctor and Cavallero on Jorge
López, and when he then awarded a penalty to the visitors after Amor
tripped Vagner (which Catanha subsequently missed) Roig couldn't contain
himself any longer. Rodríguez ordered the ground's security staff to
escort him back to his seat, but presumably fearing for their jobs (they were
not stupid) nobody obeyed and the president remained in the players' tunnel
shouting insults at the linesman and fourth official. He must have felt a bit
of a Charlie though when his side were given a very dubious penalty after
Catanha supposedly pulled over Palermo (it seemed to be the other way around),
and Villarreal ended up winning the game as a result. The disciplinary
committee are going to have an interesting session this week.
Orchestrated protests by
Rayo fans as Téllez Sánchez and his fellows came on to the pitch
after several controversial decisions had gone against the Madrid based side.
That may be why the referee decided against awarding a possible goal when
Valladolid's Luis García fired in a shot which ricocheted off the cross
bar on to (or behind?) the line and back up out off the bar again. Television
pictures seemed to show that it was in, but Téllez probably decided for
the safety of himself and his colleagues that he would give the home side the
benefit of the doubt. and waved play on. Valladolid manager Pepe Moré
complained after the match that the aggressive demonstration by the fans had
cost his side a point. (15.04.02) |
