We are starting to wonder
whether referees have spotted our pages and have decided to share the spoils
between them. Two weeks ago González Vázquez won our white stick
award hands down, last week it was Pérez Lasa without opposition and
this week Turienzo stands head and shoulders above the rest. We can imagine
them meeting up to decide who gets this week's prize: "It's your turn to send
off three players this week, Fulanito De Tal". "Oh goody, now who shall I
choose...".
Turienzo had no doubts when
he took charge of the Andalucian derby between Betis and Recreativo. First of
all it was Varela who was given a dubious second yellow card, before half time,
then the same for Luis Fernández after the break, and finally a straight
red for Filipescu at the behest of a linesman, leaving Betis with eight men
(see villains section for more). Turienzo also missed a first half penalty when
Recre's Loren handled in the area, and then turned a blind eye to Juanito's
foul on Xisco in the penalty area right at the end, some say to make up for the
sendings off.
Compared to him, Moreno
Delgado was an 'angelito'. He did however rule out a perfectly good goal from
Makaay which would have been a hat-trick, and then ignored a penalty appeal at
the other end when Naybet swung Bolic around by his shirt. Even a World
Wrestling Federation referee would have called that one.
