White Stick Awards

So who's turn this week for the white stick award? No doubt in our minds, Megia Dávila is the man after causing an uproar in Pamplona where home side Osasuna lost to bottom club Recreativo. Both teams benefited fro refereeing decisions in the last two weeks, but this time Osasuna were the losers after Megia disallowed a second half Iván Rosado goal for a previous foul and then turned down an appeal for a penalty when Loren appeared to handle in the area. He then awarded a penalty to the visitors five minutes from the end ruling that Mateo tripped Benítez just inside the area which resulted in Cubillo scoring the winner. Right or wrong, they certainly will not welcome him back to the Sadar stadium in a hurry.

Talking of dubious penalties, any similarity between reality and the spot kick that Pérez Pérez awarded to Betis was purely coincidental. Denilson must have thought he was in the floor exercises section of the Olympic gymnastics competition when he danced through the defence and launched himself into a forward somersault a yard from the edge of the area as Romero came in to tackle. Pérez bought it though as the Brazilian landed with a well rehearsed thud inside the area, and Betis were three up. (05.11.02)
