Referees were seeing red
this week as players and managers treated them with disrespect. . If they had
actually done what they had been told to do, half of them would have been in
the unusual injuries ward of the local hospital and more than one would be up
before the judge. Instead they chose to do what they normally do under those
circumstances, pull out the red card to get rid of the offending body. Four of
the seven red cards this weekend were for insults, two of which came from Pino
Zamorano against Barcelona players Motta and Overmars, one from Rubinos
Pérez against Mallorca's Ibagaza and the other from Pérez Lasa
against Rayo manager Fernando Vázquez (see villains section for more
details). Anyone over the age of 18 who wants to read what was said, link in to
the new RFEF web site, www.rfef.es (referees reports in "1ª
división" section - click on the whistle). Appeals are in any case
expected against most of the red cards (without any rude words) from all
concerned. (04.12.02) |
