Despite the low number of
cards this week, the men in black were under fire from managers and players
alike. Real Sociedad's Westerveld is still getting used to Spain and he said
that nine out of every ten referees were bad. His complaint this time though
was that González Vázquez kept the game going for four minutes of
injury time when the fourth referee had signalled three. This time it was
important as Villarreal scored twice in the last minute to equalise. According
to the respective managers, the two games which finished scoreless could have
had different results if Pino Zamorano had not disallowed what looked like a
perfectly good goal for Málaga's Darío Silva against Betis and
Turienzo Alvarez had seen Rayo's Mario handle the ball in the penalty area. And
it appears they were not too hot on penalty decisions either, Valencia's Carew
complaining that Pérez Pérez should have given him three against
Espanyol, and Alavés midfielder Astudillo saying that the one that
Rubinos Pérez gave against him for a foul on Sevilla's Javi Navarro was
incorrect. With international matches coming up, the referees go off for a
weekend of training. By the looks of things, they need it.
