All eyes were on
Muñiz Fernández on Saturday, the man who the computer had decided
would referee the "derby" match between Real Madrid and Barcelona. And players
and fans had mixed views about his performance, after he showed eleven yellow
cards, including one to Roberto Carlos for diving in the penalty area, and sent
off Michel Salgado for a second bookable offence near the end. More
controversially though he disallowed a Mendieta goal , turned down a penalty on
Luis Enrique by Hierro and turned a blind eye to brawl between the two sides in
the first half after Zidane had flattened Puyol with a hand in the face. Zidane
got booked for that, which probably saved him from a video investigation and a
ban, but Muñiz let Luis Enrique off what would have been a second yellow
card after he raced aggressively to protest, and ignored the fact that Makelele
pulled violently on Motta's hair in the same incident. Although captured on
tape, the disciplinary committee decided not to take the matter any further. To
be fair to the referee though, these matches are not easy to officiate, and he
at least avoided any more serious incidents by taking a level headed approach.
