More controversy this week,
particularly at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium where Pérez Lasa managed
to upset almost everyone. Espanyol manager Javier Clemente eventually got
himself booked for protesting, but he did have a good point more than once.
Pérez awarded a borderline penalty against Clemente's side when Jarque
brought down Roberto Carlos, but then refused to give one the other way when
Pavón tripped up Bastia at the other end. And what proved to be the
winning goal by Ronaldo near the end was pretty certainly offside. He did give
one decision the other way though which the Madrid players objected to when
Raúl cleverly recovered the ball from a surprised Lemmens and scored,
only to have the goal disallowed and Raúl shown a yellow card. Only a
couple of years ago Espanyol won the cup thanks to a goal by Tamudo in
identical circumstances which was allowed to stand. (07.10.03) |
