Puentes Leira was the
referee who hit the headlines in the midweek round of games. Described one
experienced radio commentator as the worst referee in the first division,
despite nine years of experience, Puentes proceeded to spoil Real Sociedad's
night by disallowing two goals, one for a positional offside when Karpin scored
and the other for a hand ball by Kovacevic which was also dubious, and he also
turned down a penalty appeal for a foul by Ayala on Kovacevic. The Real
Sociedad fans must have agreed wholeheartedly with the radio referee by the end
of the match. (05.12.03) |
