Oh dear, Tristante Oliva was at it again this weekend! Only two weeks after his controversial decision to award a last minute to penalty to Real Madrid allowing them to equalise against Valencia, the computer with the funny sense of humour picked him out to referee the game between Deportivo and Barcelona. Rijkaard saw him coming and decided to pull off Davids at half time to avoid his pit-bull picking up a second yellow, and on came Motta. The young Brazilian midfielder is not an angel himself, having been sent off twice this season, but he was surprised when Tristante booked him for a foul committed by Cocu. But that was only the precursor to what was to come, and when Oleguer pulled down Valerón on the edge of the area, out came the yellow card again for Motta. The Barça players pounced on the referee and his linesman (who probably had his glasses on back to front as he confirmed it was number 23 when in fact it was number 32), but after over five minutes of arguing Motta had to go. The disciplinary committees of course cancelled both cards, but at least up to the time of writing this report there was no reprimand for the referee. Maybe this website could start a whip-round for a couple of pairs of new specs? (04.03.04)
