Carmona Méndez took
advantage of his appointment as cup final referee to race to the top of our
table. Veteran of many campaigns, Carmona managed to produce no less than 17
yellow cards and two reds over the 120 minutes (extra time included), something
of a record not only in Spanish cup finals but in the competition as a whole.
And six more bookings at the weekend in the match between Barcelona and Real
Sociedad consolidated his position as our new leader. Megia Dávila did
give him a run for his money though in the extraordinary game between Racing
Santander and Celta, Not only did Megia show 11 yellows and two reds, he also
gave four penalties, two of which in favour of Racing he ordered to be retaken
for encroachment into the area by the local players. Cristian Alvarez was cool
enough to score every time, but there were protests for at least for two of the
penalties he awarded for hand ball, one against Racing when Pablo Casar had his
arm against his body and one against Celta when the ball struck Angel on the
back of the arm when he was looking the other way. (23.03.04) |
