White Stick Awards

Megía Dávila was back in the news again, and he moves to the top of our charts after showing a total of twelve yellow cards and three reds in the game between Valladolid and Real Sociedad. All three red cards were for home side players, two for insulting him and his fellow officials, and he had to be given a police escort just to get off the field of play at the end of the match. Megía also awarded two dubious penalties, the first for the locals which was taken by their goalkeeper Bizzarri (his shot hit the post but Sales scored on the rebound) and the second to the visitors which was missed by Karpin.

Talking of penalties, Tristante Oliva upset Albacete when he awarded a late one to Athletic Bilbao after Fernando Navarro fell and touched the ball with his arm. Athletic saved a point thanks to that, which in all honesty they probably deserved as Albacete's goal also came from a hotly disputed penalty earlier on. Elsewhere Pérez Lasa was not the most popular man in Villarreal when he disallowed what looked like two perfectly good goals for the home side in the opening minutes. Villarreal won anyway though, so they didn't complain too much. (11.05.04)
