Referees were not the most
popular chaps in Spain this weekend, and nowhere more so than in Zaragoza.
Teixeira Vitienes is unlikely to be offered the keys to the city after awarding
two very dubious penalties and sending off the two perpetrators in their game
at Albacete, actions which probably cost the visitors the match. The locals had
complained recently that they had not had a penalty awarded in their favour
this season, but Teixeira (who, let's be fair, had disallowed a perfectly good
goal by Pacheco just before the break), decided to make amends on behalf of the
refereeing community and pointed to the spot when the ball hit Oscar
González on the arm from point blank range. But "exceeding the
expectations of his customers" as they say in all the good business schools, he
also produced a second yellow card for the forward, leaving Zaragoza with ten
men. And then with the game in the final minutes he gave a second penalty when
Francisco fell under the challenge of keeper Luis García, producing
another red card for the keeper. Víctor Muñoz's comments were
unprintable (he picked up some choice expressions during his time in Scotland),
but the three points stayed at home. (08.02.05) |
