Pino Zamorano was in the
firing line this weekend for his performance in the match between Mallorca and
Sevilla. The referee was much criticised by the local management and fans after
failing to send off Javi Navarro following a tackle which left Arango on the
critical list in a local hospital (see villains section), only showing a yellow
card to the defender after heated protests from the stands. To make matters
worse though, he awarded a penalty to the visitors only two or three minutes
later after Baptista rather obviously fell under a light challenge from Ramis,
and when the agitated home players protested he produced a second yellow card
to De los Santos and sent him off. In the closing minutes he compensated to a
small extent by giving Baptista a very rigorous second caution to even up the
numbers, but Mallorca lost the match and are now in serious danger of
relegation, Pino did complain to the press afterwards though after he was put
through the hoop, saying that from his angle he only saw an obstruction, and
from the reaction of some people one would think that it was he who had elbowed
the Venezuelan midfielder. (22.03.05) |
