Phew, that's a relief! For a
moment there we thought that Spanish referees had gone soft after their
performance on the opening day, but that is obviously not the case - four red
cards and a host of penalties proved that. But no doubt about where the white
stick award goes this week, Ramírez Domínguez (or should it be
his linesman) taking all the honours after awarding a goal that wasn't to Celta
against Real Madrid. The pictures went around the world of Canobbio's shot
bouncing down off the crossbar outside the line, but the men in black swore
that it was in and that was that. Ramírez also upset the Real Madrid
players when he disallowed a goal for the positional offside of Ronaldo (should
it have counted under the new rules?), but they complained less when he awarded
them a penalty for a dubious foul on Baptista. Welcome to Spain! (13.09.05)
