Megia Dávila is never
one to hold back on dishing out the cards, and he races to the top of our table
this weekend with a season's record of 15 yellow cards and two reds in the bad
tempered game between Sevilla and Deportivo. Megia, who has finished top of
Soccer-Spain's white stick table each of the past two seasons, had already
given out ten yellows by half time, and also awarded two penalties to the
visitors, the first of which had to be controversially retaken for encroachment
of two or three Sevilla players in the area after Palop saved Tristán's
first kick.
Elsewhere Muñiz
Fernández upset both Villarreal and Barcelona after he first failed to
spot a fairly clear penalty by Valdés on Sorín in the opening
minutes of their match, and then fell for an exaggerated fall by José
Marí, sending off Márquez after showing him a second yellow card
in the incident. Teixeira Vitienes was also criticised by both sides after
waving away two penalty claims by Getafe and ignoring their pleas for Ronaldo's
goal to be disallowed for hand ball, and then upsetting Luxemburgo by sending
off Beckham. There again the Real Madrid coach had more important things to
worry about a few hours later.
And finally González
Vázquez was not the most popular person in Carlos Bianchi's books after
he let the game over-run the five minutes added on, allowing Athletic Bilbao to
score the equaliser in the 96th minute. A couple of minutes earlier
Atlético Madrid's substitute keeper and a defender were deafened by a
loud firecracker which fell in the visitors' goalmouth, and the coach felt that
the game should have been brought to an end at that point. (06.12.05)
