The Christmas spirit did
finally show through after last weekend's excesses, with only 49 yellow cards
and three reds as against the record 72 and 13 last time around. Only Teixeira
Vitienes got his "calzoncillos" in a "vuelta" (as they don't say around here),
with ten minutes of wobbliness at the start of the second half of the match
between Málaga and Villarreal. First of all he turned down two fairly
valid penalty appeals from the home side's Morales and Nacho, and then when
Edgar also fell theatrically in the area he produced a yellow card for diving
and another to Salva for protesting. Up to then more or less ok, but then he
turned to his linesman who for some reason thought it was a penalty, and it was
total rewind. Edgar's yellow card was scratched, (Salva's was not, but was
cancelled on appeal), and Teixeira pointed to the spot. Flabergastation all
round, and Salva in particular was so surprised that he fired a weak kick at
Viera and then fell over going for the rebound. Put it down to all those
festive season lunches! (24.12.05) |
